Pregnancy is a beautiful, exciting time in your life. As your little human grows, your body goes through many changes. Some changes can be positive, such as glowing skin and shiny hair. However, some changes can be problematic, such as:

  • Back, groin, or rib pain

  • Morning sickness

  • Heartburn

  • Constipation

  • Fatigue

  • Anxiety

  • Small for date babies

  • Breech babies

Acupuncture during pregnancy may be helpful in reducing or stopping your symptoms. Your first concern might be whether a treatment is safe for you and your baby. The answer is yes, when a properly trained acupuncturist gives the treatment. They know what acupuncture points are safe to use in pregnancy. Pregnancy acupuncture in Auckland at Bloom Acupuncture is a safe and natural treatment provided by a qualified and registered acupuncturist.

Breech Baby Acupuncture During Pregnancy

During your last trimester, you may find that your baby has not turned into a good position for birth. Acupuncture and a treatment called moxibustion may help encourage the baby to turn. Moxibustion is the burning of a stick made of mugwort leaves, and is applied in-directly over the skin at a specific acupuncture point. Treatment at around 34 to 36 weeks gestation is a good time to try.

Pre-Labour Pregnancy Acupuncture

Pre-Labour Pregnancy Acupuncture is a series of weekly treatments that takes place from 36 weeks gestation. The aim is to prepare the mother for labour. Acupuncture is safely used at specific points on the arms and legs to assist in ripening the cervix, helping the baby be in the best position for labour, boost the mother's energy, and relax muscles and tendons in preparation for birth. Research has shown that pre-labour pregnancy acupuncture may help reduce the length of time the mother labours and reduce the need for interventions such as forceps or caesarean sections. The patient will also be provided with information on acupressure points that can be used during labour to reduce pain and nausea, help establish contractions and help move the baby down into the pelvis. It's also a lovely calming time where you can focus on you in the lead up to welcoming your baby into the world.

Induction Acupuncture

Specific acupuncture points can be used to encourage the start of contractions and labour. Acupuncture for induction can be used when you have a medical induction booked and want to start labour more naturally. It is best to seek acupuncture treatment four to five days before the medical induction. If no induction is booked by your midwife or obstetrician, and there is no medical reason for bringing on labour, then acupuncture treatment will be focused on pre-labour preparation. If induction acupuncture is given too early, it can bring on labour before the baby is ready, which may prolong the delivery and possibly increase the need for interventions.
